Girl Scouts Dream Up Local Dessert Challenge

Did you know that the world’s largest girl-led business is none other than the Girl Scouts’ annual cookie program?

Or that aside from being delicious, the cookie season—now through March 9—is focused on teaching girls in this community important life skills such as goal setting and giving back—the kind of know-how needed to become a responsible woman.

“These are essential values to successfully navigate life, whether working on a high-school science project team, running a household or being a company CEO,” says Susan de Queljoe, senior associate of marketing and communications for the Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus Pine Council (GSACPC). And this year, local cookie sales are more important than ever.

For 2014, GSACPC has set a goal of selling 3.3 million packages of cookies, with the proceeds used to support Girl Scouting in Arizona.

“We have a very aggressive goal this year and plan to use the proceeds of every package sold over 3 million to support the transformation of our local camp—Camp Sombrero—into a Leadership Center for Girls and Women,” says de Queljoe.

Camp Sombrero, perched at the base of South Mountain Preserve, is owned by the Council and has served girls over the last 40 years. This 14.5 acre site will be transformed into the Leadership Center for Girls and Women,.

“In an effort to spice up sales this year and ensure we move closer to our Camp Sombrero goal, we have a special twist in store for cookie season, sure to inspire members of this community to buy a few extra boxes,” says de Queljoe.

The twist?

The Girl Scout Cookie Dessert Challenge, where chefs from more than a dozen Arizona hotspots will use their culinary prowess to re-imagine one of the six beloved brands of Girl Scout cookies—Do-Si-Dos, Tagalongs, Samoas, Savannah Smiles, Trefoils or Thin Mints—into a custom dessert menu item.

Each restaurant, whose chef selected a cookie flavor via a drawing, has agreed to feature its dessert on the menu through Februrary, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the transformation of Camp Sombrero.

Dessert: Like apples and peanut butter? Then you will love this sweet and savory take-off of the sack-lunch classic, a Do-Si-Do Apple Pie.

Also participating in the Valley are 5th and Wine, Olive + Ivy, The Herb Box at Southbridge, Beckett’s Table, Salty Sow (near Paradise Valley Mall in Phoenix, but with corporate headquarters in the Airpark), Blue Wasabi, CHoP, and TQLA.
